DESCRIPTION:Music\, Seasonal/Special Events\n\n\n\n\nOld Westbury Gardens\, in association with the Leila Heller Gallery\, is proud to present\n\n\n\nIn Situ: The Works of John Clement at Old Westbury Gardens\n\n\n\nThis striking outdoor exhibition features seven (7) of artist John Clement’s dynamic steel and aluminum sculptures installed in the Gardens\, inviting visitors to encounter art and landscape in dialogue. \n\n\n\nOn view through October 31\, the works transform familiar vistas with sweeping curves and bold forms that shift with light and perspective. \n\n\n\nThe sculptures are located on the path leading into and around the Primrose Path and by the Thatched Cottage. \n\n\n\nTogether\, the works enrich the visitor experience\, adding a striking new dimension to the beauty of Old Westbury Gardens. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is included with admission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \n\n\n\nJohn Clement (b.1969\, USA) is a New York-based sculptor known for his bold\, curvilinear steel works that transform industrial materials into playful\, dynamic forms. A former apprentice to sculptors Mark di Suvero and John Henry\, Clement carries forward the Constructivist tradition with a distinctive vocabulary of looping\, arcing lines that evoke energy\, movement\, and joy. \n\n\n\nHe studied at the University of Pennsylvania and the School of Visual Arts before establishing his own practice in the 1990s. Working primarily with steel and aluminum pipe\, Clement bends\, welds\, and paints each piece by hand\, ranging from intimate tabletop works to monumental public sculptures installed across the U.S. and the globe. \n\n\n\nHis work has been exhibited widely\, including solo shows at Leila Heller Gallery and group exhibitions at institutions such as KANEKO. From the flapper’s bold new look\, to the influence of designers like Jeanne Lanvin and Coco Chanel\, we will consider the impact of Art Deco design\, the rise of ready-to-wear\, and how fashion reflected the social transformations of the Jazz Age. \n\n\n\nThis lecture explores Euro-American fashion in the 1920s\, a decade marked by dramatic cultural shifts and artistic innovation. Summer will examine the evolving post-World War I feminine silhouette and highlight the influential work of leading couturiers\, such as Jeanne Lanvin and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel\, among others\, who helped shape the decade’s aesthetic. The influence of Art Deco on fashion design will be considered\, alongside the tension between haute couture luxury and the growing accessibility of mass-produced ready-to-wear. Finally\, Summer will trace how the flapper’s rebellious new look and oversized Oxford bags worn by “flaming youth” were expressions of social transformation. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n\n\n\nSummer Anne Lee is a Brooklyn-based fashion historian. She has an MA in Fashion and Textile Studies from the Fashion Institute of Technology\, where she currently teaches various courses in fashion history. Seasonal non-alcoholic refreshments will be served while you paint. Please arrive 15 minutes early to get settled\, and dress for a creative (and possibly messy) time. No experience is necessary—just bring your friends and have fun! \n\n\n\nAll participants will receive an 11×14” canvas\, two brushes\, and an acrylic paint set to take home so the creativity can continue! \n\n\n\nAges 12 and up.
