Cellist Suzanne Mueller's Summer Beech Tree Concert series at Old Westbury Gardens celebrates its 14th season with the eclectic range of music spanning styles and centuries and roster of talented and versatile artists series audiences have come to expect:
All concerts are at 3:00 pm. In the event of rain, they will be moved into the beautiful Red Ballroom. Concerts are free with admission.
Sunday, July 9 - Cross Island
Suzanne's cello/piano duo with Elinor Abrams Zayas - once again opens the series CROSS ISLAND, with clarinetist Sandy Tepper. The program will include duets and trios by Wolfgang Mozart, Robert Schumann, Antonio Carlos, Jobim. Paquito D'Rivera, Stephen Schwartz, Ruth Schonthal, Witold Lutoslawski, and others, There will be a drawing - free to all in attendance - for CROSS ISLAND's Quiet Strength CD and Suzanne's Solitaire CD, released at the Gardens in July 2013 in celebration of Suzanne's first decade as Beach Tree Artist-in-Residence. Both CDs are also for sale in the Gift Shop.
Sunday, July 16 - The McCarron Brothers Jazz Quartet
The McCarron Bros. make their third appearance under the West Porch Beech Tree for the second concert of the 2017 series. This time, reed man Paul Carlon and guitarist Mark McCarron are joined by two new bros: Trifon Dimitrov on bass and Paul Wells on drums. The music will again be an atmospheric blend influenced by Scofield funk, Miles Davis fusion, Frisell-ish country, swing, Radiohead, and Cuban music, including music by Herbie Hancock and others, as well as original tunes by Paul and Mark, with Beech Tree Artist-in Residence cellist Suzanne Mueller sitting in on a few selections and performing a solo.
Sunday, July 30 - Hungrytown
Folk duo HUNGRYTOWN Husband and wife Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson - return to the Gardens once again, performing their original music with Suzanne. They've been described by Country Jukebox as "modern representatives of traditions-based folk music," and are a big favorite every year.
Sunday, August 6 - Cross Island
The series closes once again with the return of CROSS ISLAND, this time with a new collaborator - guest violinist Beryl Diamond Chacon. The program will include music by Gabriel Faure, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Paquito D'Rivera, Astor Piazzolla, Mark McCarron, and others. Attendees will again be eligible for a free drawing for CROSS ISLAND's 2011 CD, Quiet Strength, and Suzanne's Solitaire CD,
