In the Footsteps of Giants is a special speaker panel curated by Garden Masterclass that celebrates three extraordinary women whose gardens transformed horticulture and garden design: Vita Sackville-West, Beth Chatto, and Gertrude Jekyll. Following its acclaimed debut at the Charleston Garden Festival in the UK, this engaging program now comes to the United States.

The panel brings together the current custodians of these iconic gardens—Long Barn, Beth Chatto’s Garden, and Hestercombe—who share personal insights into preserving and stewarding these living masterpieces. Moderated by renowned garden designer and lecturer Annie Guilfoyle, the discussion explores the lasting influence of these pioneering women, revealing untold stories, fascinating details, and why their ideas remain deeply relevant today.

Featured speakers include:

  • Julia Boulton — Chair of Beth Chatto’s Plants & Gardens; granddaughter of Beth Chatto
  • Rebecca Lemonius — Custodian of Long Barn; horticulturist and student of Great Dixter
  • Claire Greenslade — Former Head Gardener at Hestercombe Gardens; currently developing a historic walled garden on a private estate
  • Moderator: Annie Guilfoyle — Garden designer, international lecturer, and Co-Director of Garden Masterclass

Each will offer a unique perspective on the legacy, challenges, and joy of caring for gardens shaped by true giants of horticultural history.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.
