Children, wear your special outfits for a festive holiday party as celebrated in the early 1900s. From hanging stockings to decorating Christmas trees, many of our favorite traditions emerged during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Learn about these traditions, participate in games and songs, and then enjoy the performance of “The Gingerbread Man” from WonderSpark Puppets!
WonderSpark Puppets, a New York City based puppet theater company, will put on the show, and the party will also include a guided tour of decorated Westbury House, including the kitchen, led by the butler, footmen, and nannies of a Westbury House era gone by. Santa will also join in the festivities!
Did you know?
The Christmas stocking was a relatively new tradition in the Edwardian Era. The tradition takes its roots from the story of St. Nicholas, who heard of some girls who didn’t have enough money for their wedding dowries and filled girls’ drying stockings with gold coins. In the Edwardian Era, stockings would have been hung by the fire or on the end of the children’s beds and would have been filled with things like oranges, nuts, sweets, and little toys.
